Going Green Imperative Actions

Submitted by: John Smith Peay

Today more than ever before most of us read about going green on all types of media, including the news, internet sites, blogs and forums, radio, television, and in daily conversation.

Anyone should know about their own environment and make sure not to pollute, reuse products rather than discarding them, or at least deliver them to the recycle facility for proper disposal.

It appears almost impossible to think that starting my vehicle and allowing it to run for 5 minutes to get the heating or air conditioning running has any kind of effect on the earth’s pulse, however when you multiply that millions of times, there isn’t any doubt that it has a severe effect.

Basic things that all of us do, or don’t do, have an effect on the earth’s precious atmosphere. How many times per week do you go to the coffeehouse and get your espresso in a paper or cardboard cup? You might have thought about how many years it will take for that cup to decompose, but have you thought about the energy which went into the production and transportation of that cup? Multiplied by…?

Do you minimize, re-use and recycle? Make it a target to reduce how much trash you generate through recycling and composting. Your town office or town hall can provide a long list of how you can separate your things for recycling. Each and every item that you could re-use or recycle is one less item within the landfill.

One of the simplest approaches to help is to buy and use fabric shopping bags. The hard part is remembering to take them out of the car and into the shop, but when you get into the routine, it will become second nature. Resolve to not accept plastic-type bags in a shop.

Traveling in a gas-powered vehicle as little as possible is a great way to conserve. Walk or cycle whenever and wherever you can; it ll support the planet and your overall health. If you live in the city, make use of the bus. Also, if your home is in the country, carpool to work and rather than making a number of journeys every week to run errands, save them for one journey.

If you take the time to look at your everyday activities, and how you can perform them slightly differently, you may find yourself not just supporting the environment, but also helping your wallet. Do only full loads of laundry and dishes; cut your shower by two minutes; switch to energy-saving lights; turn your family fridge and air conditioning down just one degree and turning off your electronic equipment during the night are all simple tips on how to help.

Think about the possibility of employing alternative power sources at the local level or at least buy your electrical energy from alternate energy sources. It can be a large expenditure to generate a wind turbine farm or a large solar power field, so you will minimize the cost by earmarking your power supplier as originating from green suppliers.

Challenge oneself to think before you act for a few days and you will be pleasantly surprised at how effortless it really is to start the whole process of going green.
