Submitted by: Audrey C. Tan

Having good quality strings is important in your guitar classes and practice. A string is the main element which helps guitar produce sound through vibrations. Without strings on your guitar, you won’t be able to produce any sound with your musical instrument. You dont need to go to a guitar school to know this.

Different types of guitar have different types of strings too. The common materials which strings are made of are nylon, steel, and gut. A standard guitar is composed of six strings, but there are other guitars which have up to eighteen strings.

How to Buy Good Strings

To be able to produce good quality sound from your guitar, it is important to have good quality strings first. When buying strings, you have to consider the type of guitar you are using. A classical guitar uses nylon strings; a steel-string acoustic guitar uses bronze; and an electric guitar uses nickel strings. The thickness of strings also differs depending on their position and note in the fret board.

Guitar teachers can also suggest what particular type and quality of strings you should choose for your instrument. Changing your strings from time to time is also important. But the frequency is based on how often you play your guitar.

Care Tips for Your Strings

To make your guitar strings last longer, you must observe proper care and maintenance. The simplest thing you can do to lengthen the life of your guitar string is to store your musical instrument properly. Put your guitar in its case when not in use and do not place it in a humid place to avoid fast deterioration of the strings.

After you play your guitar in practice or guitar classes, wipe the strings with soft and dry cloth. Perennial cleaning of your musical instrument is also vital in keeping your guitar and strings last longer and stronger. When cleaning the strings, you can add a small amount of petroleum jelly on a dry cloth or paper you will use to keep the sheen and brilliance of the strings.

How to Make Your Strings Sound Bette

You might learn a trick or two from guitar teachers on how to make your guitar sound better. Moreover, you can perform an old trick with your guitar strings to make them produce better sound. Many guitarists boil their old and new guitar strings in water to make the sound better.

Boiling your old guitar strings will make your sound crispier, sharper, and springier. Interestingly, if you boil your new strings, the tone and tension will also improve.

The strings are boiled for three to five minutes, then dried with a cloth towel and heated in an oven. This technique can have risks too if you are not familiar with the steps. Moreover, you need to buy good quality strings for this method. You should also avoid boiling your guitar strings too often, as this will cause them to require more tension to maintain the right tone.

It is advisable to ask advice from guitar teachers before performing procedures like these.
